Before I had B, I had all kinds of thoughts about her first year and ultimately her first birthday party. It didn’t make sense to me to have a big party that she wouldn’t even remember. I’d planned to have a small gathering of family and friends. No muss, no fuss.
After having her, that all changed. I realized the celebration was just as much for us, (her parents) as it was for her. We were celebrating her growth and development, the many changes she had undergone, how much our lives had changed since her and, most importantly, all of us making it through that first tough, eventful year in one piece (barely).
The more I thought about it, the more I realized that I wanted to go all out. Not in a “VH1 My Super Sweet 16” kind of way, but in a “baller on a budget” fashion. We ended up with about 30 guests and though at times the planning and setup was a bit much, ultimately, I couldn’t have asked for a better turnout.
